Credit Score Requirements for Every Type of Loan in 2024

Your score determines more than just approval

Written by Robert J Wilkins IV

Mortgage Score Requirements

620 conventional minimum

Buying a home is the most common reason people care about their credit score. Different mortgage types have different minimums - and the rate you pay varies enormously based on your score.

  • Conventional Loan: 620-640+ minimum (best rates at 760+)
  • FHA Loan: 580+ for 3.5% down (500-579 requires 10% down)
  • VA Loan: No official minimum, but most lenders want 620+
  • USDA Loan: 640+ for automatic approval
  • Jumbo Loan: 700+ typically required
Every 20-point improvement in your credit score can mean a 0.25-0.5% lower mortgage rate. Over 30 years, that's tens of thousands of dollars.

Auto Loan Score Requirements

Auto lenders are generally more flexible than mortgage lenders, but your score still dramatically affects your rate. Subprime auto loans can carry rates above 20%.

  • Prime rates (under 7%): 720+ typically
  • Good rates (7-10%): 660-719
  • Higher rates (10-15%): 600-659
  • Subprime rates (15-20%+): Below 600
  • Buy-here-pay-here lots often approve anyone but charge 25%+

Credit Card Score Requirements

Credit cards have wide-ranging requirements depending on the type of card. Premium rewards cards require excellent credit; secured cards are available to almost anyone.

  • Premium rewards cards: 720-750+
  • Good cashback cards: 670-720
  • Basic unsecured cards: 620-669
  • Secured cards: Any score (deposit required)
  • Store cards: Often more lenient (640+)

Personal Loan Score Requirements

Personal loans vary significantly by lender. Online lenders often approve lower scores but charge higher rates. Credit unions tend to be more flexible with members.

  • Best rates (under 10%): 720+
  • Good rates (10-15%): 660-719
  • Higher rates (15-25%): 580-659
  • Subprime lenders: Below 580 (rates can exceed 30%)

Your Legal Rights

Consumers are protected by several federal laws when dealing with credit reporting issues related to credit score requirements for every type of loan in 2024:

  • Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) — 15 U.S.C. §1681: Requires credit bureaus to maintain accurate information and investigate disputes within 30 days. Consumers can dispute inaccurate items directly with bureaus or furnishers.
  • Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) — 15 U.S.C. §1692: Prohibits abusive, deceptive, and unfair debt collection practices. Collectors must validate debts upon request.
  • Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) — 15 U.S.C. §1679: Regulates credit repair companies and protects consumers from deceptive practices.

You may file complaints with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
