Credit Utilization: The Factor That Can Make or Break Your Score

Master the second-most important factor in your credit score

Written by Robert J Wilkins IV

What Is Credit Utilization?

30% of your FICO score

Credit utilization is the percentage of your available revolving credit that you're using. If you have $10,000 in credit limits and $3,000 in balances, your utilization is 30%. Lower is always better for your score.

  • Calculated as: (Total Balances / Total Credit Limits) x 100
  • Applies only to revolving credit (credit cards, lines of credit)
  • Both overall and per-card utilization matter
  • Under 10% is ideal; under 30% is acceptable
  • Over 50% significantly hurts your score

Why Timing Matters

Credit card companies report your balance on the statement closing date, not when you pay. Even if you pay in full each month, a high balance at statement close shows as high utilization. Pay before the statement closes to show lower utilization.

  • Balances are reported on statement closing date
  • Paying after the statement close doesn't help your score
  • Pay down balances before the statement date
  • Or make multiple payments throughout the month
  • The AZEO strategy: one card at 1%, others at zero
You could pay in full every month and still show 90% utilization if you pay after the statement closes.

Advanced Utilization Strategies

Credit score optimization experts use several strategies to minimize utilization impact. The AZEO (All Zero Except One) method keeps all cards at zero except one with a small balance. Making multiple payments per month keeps balances low at all times.

  • AZEO: Keep all cards at zero, one at 1-3%
  • Pay cards down before the statement closes
  • Request credit limit increases (without hard inquiry)
  • Keep old cards open even if unused
  • Don't close cards - it reduces available credit

Getting Help with High Utilization

If high utilization is hurting your score, you have options. Pay down balances strategically, request limit increases, or consider a balance transfer. Credit1Solutions can help you create a strategy to optimize your utilization ratio.

Your Legal Rights

Consumers are protected by several federal laws when dealing with credit reporting issues related to credit utilization: the factor that can make or break your score:

  • Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) — 15 U.S.C. §1681: Requires credit bureaus to maintain accurate information and investigate disputes within 30 days. Consumers can dispute inaccurate items directly with bureaus or furnishers.
  • Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) — 15 U.S.C. §1692: Prohibits abusive, deceptive, and unfair debt collection practices. Collectors must validate debts upon request.
  • Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) — 15 U.S.C. §1679: Regulates credit repair companies and protects consumers from deceptive practices.

You may file complaints with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
