Credit Mix: Why Having Different Types of Credit Matters
Diversity in credit types can boost your score

What Is Credit Mix?
Credit mix refers to the variety of credit account types in your credit file. FICO rewards consumers who demonstrate they can manage different kinds of credit responsibly. While only 10% of your score, it can make the difference between good and excellent credit.
- Revolving credit: Credit cards, lines of credit
- Installment loans: Auto loans, personal loans, student loans
- Mortgage loans: Home loans and HELOCs
- Retail accounts: Store credit cards
- Open accounts: Charge cards paid in full monthly
A good credit mix shows lenders you can handle different types of debt responsibly.
The Ideal Credit Mix
You don't need every type of credit, but having 2-3 different types helps. The ideal mix typically includes at least one credit card (revolving) and one installment loan (auto, personal, or student loan). A mortgage can also add to your mix.
- At least one major credit card
- At least one installment loan
- Optional: Mortgage or HELOC
- Don't open accounts just for mix - must be needed
- Quality management matters more than quantity
When Credit Mix Matters Most
Credit mix becomes more important when other factors are maxed out. If you have perfect payment history, low utilization, and long credit history, improving your credit mix could push you into the excellent category.
- Most impactful when other factors are optimized
- More important for thin credit files
- Lenders may care more about mix for large loans
- Don't obsess over mix - focus on payment history first
Building Credit Mix Wisely
Never open new credit accounts solely to improve your mix - that could backfire. Instead, when you naturally need credit (car, personal loan), choose options that add diversity to your profile. And always manage every account perfectly.
